A significant academic-industry collaboration was formalized through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, MES Asmabi College, and the Mathilakam Block Panchayat, on 8th January 2025 at Thrissur. This initiative marks a progressive step towards practical learning and community engagement for students of Mass Communication. The MoU was executed with the aim of fostering a training partnership that would provide students with real-world exposure in the fields of script writing, voice-over, editing, and media coverage of public service initiatives, particularly related to the Coastal Protection Project undertaken by the Mathilakam Block Panchayat. Parties Involved: First Party: MES Asmabi College, represented by Dr. Reena Mohammed, Principal. Second Party: Mathilakam Block Panchayat, represented by: Sri. R.K. Baby, General Coordinator, Coastal Protection Project (Block Member, Division 14) Sri. K.A. Hasphal, Chairperson, Welfare Standing Committee (Division 11) Sri. Noushad Karukapadath, Block Member (Division 10) Sri. V.S. Jinesh, Block Member (Division 15) Smt. Hafsa Ofor, Block Member (Division 13) Smt. Shobhana Sarangadharan, Block Member (Division 12) Objectives and Scope: The core objective of the MoU is to collaboratively work towards the documentation, voice-over, editing, and media production of activities under the Coastal Protection Project, providing students with a platform to practice and polish their professional skills. Key Areas of Agreement: Student Involvement: The Department will assign students to assist in script writing, voice-over, and editing tasks for various programs under the project. Upon request and with at least three days’ prior notice, students will also handle video coverage of major events or activities. Support from the Panchayat: The Mathilakam Block Panchayat will provide the raw footage required for editing and production tasks. Validity and Terms: The MoU will remain valid for a period of two years, from 08 January 2025 to 08 January 2027, with the provision for termination by either party with three months’ prior notice. The agreement includes clauses on quality assurance, professional standards, jurisdiction for disputes (Thrissur), and the process for revisions or extensions upon mutual consent. Significance: This MoU highlights the commitment of MES Asmabi College to integrate experiential learning with community development. It also reflects the Panchayat’s openness to collaborate with academic institutions for the effective execution and promotion of public welfare projects. By bridging academia and governance, this partnership ensures that students not only acquire practical knowledge but also contribute meaningfully to sustainable development and public communication initiatives.
