On 09 December 2024, the Department of Psychology at MES Asmabi College organized a field visit to the Government Mental Health Centre in Thrissur for its first-year undergraduate psychology students. This visit aimed to provide students with practical exposure to mental health care settings and introduce them to the diverse career opportunities within the field of psychology. The event began with an engaging orientation session conducted by Dr. Raheemudheen P. K., a Clinical Psychologist at the Government Mental Health Centre. Dr. Raheemudheen offered a comprehensive overview of the operations at the mental health center, emphasizing the roles and responsibilities of mental health professionals. He also elaborated on various career pathways in psychology, encouraging students to explore different areas of specialization in the field. After the orientation, the students were divided into smaller groups and guided through various wards and cells within the center. This experience allowed the students to observe the day-to-day functioning of the mental health facility, understand the complexities of patient care, and learn about the challenges faced by both patients and healthcare professionals. The ward visits served as an eye-opening experience, providing real-world insights into mental health practices. As a gesture of social responsibility, the students and faculty members contributed toiletry and cleaning items to the hospital. This act of kindness was appreciated by the hospital staff and helped reinforce the values of empathy, compassion, and community service among the students. The visit was accompanied by faculty members, including Mr. Lathif Penath, Head of the Department of Psychology, and Ms. Aswathy K. L., a teaching faculty member. Their presence and guidance ensured that the visit was meaningful and educational, offering students a deeper understanding of the professional environment and the significance of mental health care. In conclusion, the field visit to the Government Mental Health Centre was an enriching and invaluable experience for the first-year psychology students. It provided them with a practical understanding of the mental health sector, while also inspiring them to actively contribute to societal well-being. The Department of Psychology extends its sincere gratitude to Dr. Raheemudheen P. K., the hospital staff, and all participants who made this visit successful, leaving a lasting impact on the students’ academic and professional journeys.
