As part of World Suicide Prevention Day, the Department of Psychology at MES Asmabi College organized two impactful events aimed at raising awareness and fostering proactive measures for suicide prevention. The programs, held on September 11 and September 12, 2023, featured a Gatekeeper Training session and a Tableau presentation, respectively. Gatekeeper Training Session - September 11, 2023 On September 11, 2023, the first event, a Gatekeeper Training session, was conducted from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM in the college seminar hall. The session, themed "Creating Hope Through Action," was led by Lathif Penath, Assistant Professor of the Department of Psychology and Head of the Department. The objective of the training was to equip participants with the necessary skills to identify and support individuals at risk of suicide. The session began with a welcome speech by Dr. A Biju, Principal of MES Asmabi College, who emphasized the critical role of educational institutions in suicide prevention. Dr. K.P. Sumedhan, Self-Financing Director, also addressed the gathering, highlighting the importance of community involvement in mental health initiatives. Lathif Penath's training covered key topics such as recognizing warning signs of suicide, effective communication strategies for intervention, and the importance of providing timely support. The interactive nature of the session allowed participants to engage in role-playing exercises, enhancing their ability to respond to real-life situations. The training underscored the importance of empathy, active listening, and prompt action in preventing suicide. Tableau Presentation - September 12, 2023 The following day, on September 12, 2023, the Department of Psychology organized a Tableau presentation at 3:30 PM in the seminar hall. This creative event was designed to visually depict the struggles and signs associated with suicidal thoughts, aiming to foster a deeper understanding and empathy among the audience. The tableau, performed by students of the Psychology Department, portrayed a series of vignettes that illustrated the emotional turmoil and isolation often experienced by individuals contemplating suicide. The powerful imagery and emotive performances helped convey the message of the importance of support and intervention. The event was coordinated by Sabitha V. Majeed, a faculty member of the Department of Psychology, who also provided an introduction to the tableau, explaining its significance in the context of suicide prevention. The presentation was followed by a discussion session where students and faculty members shared their thoughts and reflections on the performance. This discussion aimed to reinforce the learning points and encourage participants to take active steps in supporting those in need. Both events organized by the Department of Psychology at MES Asmabi College were highly effective in promoting awareness and providing practical skills for suicide prevention. The Gatekeeper Training session equipped participants with essential intervention techniques, while the Tableau presentation offered a poignant reminder of the emotional aspects of suicide, emphasizing the need for compassion and timely action. These programs reflect the college's commitment to mental health awareness and the well-being of its community
