A two-day national seminar on “Biodiversity and Climate Change- 2024” was successfully organized by the Research and Post-graduate Department of Botany, M.E.S. Asmabi College, P. Vemballur, sponsored by Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB), Thiruvananthapuram, on 18th and 19th of January 2024. Dr. Girja T.P. (Head of the Department) welcomed the gathering to the programme in the inaugural session. The Principal, Prof. Dr. A. Biju, presided over the function. The seminar was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Tessy Paul P. (Retd. Professor & Former HOD, Department of Botany, Christ College (Autonomous), Irinjalakuda). Her inaugural address enlightened the attendees with the theme of the seminar. Dr. K.H. Amitha Bachan, (Asst. Professor) shared an overview of the Department's initiatives for biodiversity and environmental restoration. Adv. Navas Kattakath (Secretory and correspondent, MES Asmabi College) felicitated the programme. The inaugural function was followed by the technical session by the invited dignitaries. Four technical sessions dealt with varying aspects of the central theme of the seminar were there. The first technical session on "Microalgal diversity of freshwater ecosystem of Kerala" was led by Prof. Dr. Tessy Paul P., who expounded the fundamentals of phycology as well as the significance and function of microalgae in the present scenario of severe pollution which led to the climatic changes. In the second technical session, “Bryophyte diversity with special reference to Marchantials of Western Ghats”, Dr. Manju C. Nair (Associate Professor, Dept. of Botany, University of Calicut) made the participants enlightened on the interesting facts and importance of the bryophytes. Also, seven of the participants presented their papers from the theme “taxonomy, ecology and interactions of the lower plant groups”. Dr. Geo Joseph (Asst. Professor in Botany, Carmel College, Mala) and Dr. Prajith T. M. (Asst. Professor in Botany, Sree Krishna College, Guruvayur) chaired the session. With these two remarkable lectures and paper presentations, we concluded the first day of the seminar. 3 The second day started with technical session III, by Dr. Arun Kumar T. K. (Assistant Professor, Dept. of Botany, Zamorin’s Guruvayurappan College) on the topic “Fungal diversity and entangled lives”, which took the audience to the mysterious world of fungi. The lecture was really exciting and fascinating to learn more about fungi and their importance in nature. The fourth technical session was handled by Prof. Dr. Jos T. Puthur (Professor, Dept. of Botany, University of Calicut) on the “Modulations of photosynthesis in plants subjected to abiotic stress”. The talk was really informative, intriguing, and well explained how plants adapt to the different abiotic pressures and climate changes that exist today. After these two incredible lectures, paper presentations were done in two parallel tracks on the themes “climate change and conservation strategies”, with six presentations and “phytochemical assessment studies and plant stress management” with eight presentations. Prof. E. J. Vincent (Retd. Associate Professor in Botany, Christ College, Irinjalakuda) and Dr. Shinoj K. (Asst. Professor in Botany, Sree Kerala Varma College, Thrissur) chaired the first theme and Dr. Dhanya Thomas T. T. (Asst. Professor in Botany, Carmel College, Mala) and Dr. Gayathri G. (Asst. Professor in Botany, Sree Krishna College, Guruvayur) chaired the second theme respectively. There were participants including post-graduate students and research scholars from various colleges and research institutes.
