Restoration of Threatened Tree Species on International Biodiversity Day 2024
Saplings of three threatened tree species (Diospyros crumenata (CR), Prioria pinnata (VU) and Hopea ponga (VU)) were planted at Ikkara Kavu, P Vemballur, on International Biodiversity Day 2024. The sacred grove is owned by Ikkara Kavu Trust and the conservation initiatives are supported by Western Ghats Hornbill Foundation and BMC Sn Puram Gram Panchyath. The saplings were produced from threatened tree species nursery at CEtC of Western Ghats Hornbill Foundation at the MES Asmabi College with the support of Prakrithi Research Fellowship granted to Ms. Devika M. Anikumar, PhD Scholar of the Research Department of Botany, MES Asmabi College, P. Vemballur. The International Biodiversity celebration was organised by BMC SN Puram Gram Panchayath with technical support from CEtC of Western Ghats Hornbill Foundation at MES Asmabi College. The programme brought out an awareness on conservation of biodiversity and the role of community in conservation.
